The Broken Butterfly
Chapter 1
Just a little insert from Chapter 1. I'm still revising so it'll change quite frequently! Stay updated!

Hi, my name's Skye. I live in…well, that's not important right now. What is important is that I'm stuck in a HUGE mansion with these...creatures. Well, they're not really creatures, just...half-creatures; in a good way of course! This must be confusing. Okay, let me start at the beginning.

I was seated in my red cedar rocking chair, the almost finished book in my lap. As I swayed forward and backward the back of my chair would lightly collide with my accented lavender walls. The room was dark except for my tiny lamp placed slightly below me, its light evenly stroking the beige pages that lay open in front of me. My futon lay on the right side of my room next to the bookshelf that had been masked with every book one could find about werewolves, vampires, fairies, elves; you know, all those imaginary creatures. Well, I thought they were imaginary. Thing is, I had no idea.

Becoming like a zombie to the words on the pages I hadn’t heard the commotion that had been going on outside my little house. My parents, being the travelers they were, had left me on my own to take care of our tiny abode and were nowhere in sight to witness the happenings of that night; that dreadful, yet fantastic, life-changing night.

As my page ended and the new chapter was about to begin a large bang entered my room. My eyes widened as I gaped at the pieces of crushed wall that were scattered on my floor. I dropped my book and stood up, my mouth already open enough to start screaming. Just before I could get the sound out of my throat a hand grasped my lips and tightly barred any noise from escaping.

"Don't say anything, they'll hear you," a soft whisper told me as the breath of whomever, or whatever said it, lightly caressing my ear. The voice was that of a male’s, that much I was certain. His other arm wrapped around my stomach and pulled me back onto his chest. I could hear strange screeching sounds outside the walls of my house. I was scared. I struggled to get out of his arms but it was no use. He pulled me harder against his chest and kept me tightly in his grasp. My voice was just a mumble against his hand as I tried to scream for help. "Hush," his voice commanded again softly. He picked me up bridal style and shattered the window above my short dresser. That made me angry, but I was in no position to start yelling seeing as he could kill me with just one tight squeeze. There was some blood running down his hand but he didn't seem to mind. He swiftly hopped out of the window and towards a black Legacy parked in the front of my house. He gently set me on it. I could have started up the engine and just rode away but my hands were shaking too much to even think about putting them on the handlebars. My body started to shake now and I crossed my arms across my chest. It was because of the cold front the night before, I could tell, the air still smelled of rain and the pavement wasn't completely dry.

Suddenly something large and heavy enveloped the top of my head. It made me gasp and sit up straight, totally frozen in place, like pause was hit on my life at that very second.

"Don't worry," that same, seductive voice mumbled in my ear making my insides melt. I calmed down a little but my body continued to shake. Well, until I felt a warm body touch my back and long, pale, muscular arms appeared on either side of me. "Don't look behind you," it warned. Now I was even more nervous than before. Unfortunately, my curiosity got the better at me and I did what was forbidden; I looked behind me. My eyes widened from what I saw next. They were these huge creatures that had gray skin and big red eyes that had no pupils. Their pure white teeth were enormous and sharp like a shark's and they were totally bald, no hair on even one inch of their large bodies. I gasped and turned around, frightened to the point of unconsciousness. I passed out right there on the motorcycle, my head hitting against something solid.

"She was chased by a couple of blood-masks," a familiar, and yet not-so-familiar, voice whispered softly.

"Are you crazy? You could have been killed!" an angry voice whispered back.

"I had to save her, she could have gotten eaten."

"That would have been better than if you had come back with half an arm! I hate having to bandage you up."

"Lafrenius...."

"No! Don't Lafrenius me Beau! I can't dare see you get killed! You're a piece of the only family I have!"

I could feel something soft on my head and, as I became physically aware of the rest of my body, I realized I was no longer cold. My green eyes fluttered open and I sat up quickly only to get pushed back down as my head started swirling. My eyelids flew down and my head went back to the soft thing I assumed was a pillow.

"Oh look, the full breed is awake," that silky voice muttered a few feet away from me. I opened my eyes to see a boy with dirty black shorts that were torn in random places against his thighs and a tight black wife beater against his tight muscles just standing there in the light of a lamp staring at me. His lips curved into a smirk and his light blue eyes narrowed as he just continued to stare in my direction. He ruffled his neck length, dirty black hair and strutted over to me, hands in his pockets. He sat on the bed and got his face close to mine examining my face. My eyes widened and my head sunk deeper into the pillow.

"U-um," I stuttered, trying not to sound too nervous, "what are you d-doing?" His smirk turned into a smile.

"Just looking. It's been a while since I've seen a full breed and-"

"Full breed?" I cut him off. He was a little taken aback by this.

"Yeah, you're full human, correct?"

I nodded. I wasn't sure what he was pulling but his game was getting a bit obnoxious now.

"Why am I here?" I asked, a little frightened. His smile then turned into a frown.

"The filthy full breeds want your heart.”

"Didn't you just say I was a full breed?"

"Oh, yeah, but you're different. The other full breeds are full breeded demons, witches, warlocks, vampires, werewolves...." My eyes widened. Vampires? Werewolves? Fantasy creatures that could only be read about in books? He wanted me to believe all this?

"You're not serious, are you?" my voice asked mockingly.

"Yeah, they've been targeting you for quite some time. You're really fortunate they didn't attack you before I got there."

"Yeah right. There's no way I'm going to believe that there are really vampires and werewolves and demons trying to hurt me. And why do you keep calling them full breeds?" He stepped back, obviously a little annoyed.

"The answer to your first statement is simple. Look." I looked at him. His eyes suddenly became bigger than they were before and his black pupils dilated where there was no gray at all. His canines got larger and sharper and grew out of the top of his mouth. My eyes widened and I had seen enough; I believed him now. I shut my eyes and put my hands over my face.

"Okay, okay, I believe you now!" I hesitated but looked back up at him and he was back to his normal self. His eyes were blue again and his teeth were normal size; it was hard to know if what I had just saw was my imagination or if it was real. He continued as if there was no distraction in the first place.

"The answer to your question is that I'm a half-breed."

"So, you're half a vampire?"

"Precisely."
